Ways to Help Your Student at Home

All required homework follows Prince William County School's Regulation 663-1, which sets limits to the amount of time spent on homework for every grade level. The regulation can be accessed here: PWCS Instruction Regulation

K Read every night for 10 - 20 minutes.
Teachers have provided this two-sided document, "How to Read with a Beginning reader," to assist families with ways to help their student with reading.

1 Read every night for 10-20 minutes & keep track on a daily reading log. A Homework "Menu," sent home each month, provides additional options for practice.
2 Read every night for 10-20 minutes & complete log and reflection.

A double-sided practice page is sent home every Monday & required back the next Friday. The front side is math practice based on the skills learned that week while the back side is a reading log as well as a reading reflection.

*Total amount of time spent doing homework should not exceed 20 minutes per day.
3 Read every night for 20 minutes.

Study Guides, that include test-like questions, are sent home for reading & math at the start of each new unit. Parents are encouraged to help teach their child chow to study from study guides.











*Total amount of time spent doing homework should not exceed 50 minutes per day.
Students are rewarded for completing these options:
*Math Homework Folder--pages assigned on Thursday and due the following Thursday

* iXL--use to review and practice skills that are highlighted on student iXL account.
*Fact Fluency--use flashcards to memorize math facts (=/-/x/÷)
*Keep journal to practice writing (What did you learn today? What did you do today or over the weekend?)
4 Read every night for at least 20 minutes.

Study Guides, that include test-like questions, are sent home for Virginia Studies & Science at the start of each new unit. Students should spend about 10 minutes each night reviewing the study guides. Parents are encouraged to help teach their child chow to study from study guides.
